Why is it worth booking a campervan in Ireland early?

Ireland is not called the "Emerald Isle" for nothing. Mild weather and plentiful rainfall turn fields and meadows into carpets of grass and wildflowers, especially in spring and summer. The fields are interspersed with rolling hills and craggy peaks while quaint villages and bustling towns provide a welcome contrast. Add in the buzz of Dublin and an RV rental in Ireland is the perfect way to enjoy this country. Ireland's weather is at its best between May and September but this is also the busiest season, especially in July and August when the schools are on holiday. To be sure of getting a campervan rental in Ireland that meets your needs and budget, it's best to book it approximately three months before your vacation dates. If this is your first campervan vacation or you're not sure about visiting Ireland, the CamperDays knowledgeable customer service team will help create a personalized itinerary for you. At first glance, campervan rent in Ireland may seem expensive but you don't have to worry about hotel and car rental costs, while your camper's kitchen is fully equipped for home from home dining. You also have the freedom to set your own routes and timetables, ideal if traveling with young children or pets. Other advantages of booking with CamperDays include transparent cancellation conditions and no extra cost if you need to change your travel dates.

Best campervan routes around Ireland

The Wild Atlantic Way
When you have a motorhome for hire in Ireland and want to go on a long drive, one of the best options is the world’s longest coastal touring route – The Wild Atlantic Way. This route involves 2,500km of roads that offer a stunning view of the diverse scenery of Ireland, from dramatic coastlines to wild landscapes and rugged seascapes. The stretch of roads passes through nine different countries – Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork. One word of caution when driving along any section of this route is that as the roads are pretty narrow and the winds can be rough, you need to drive a little slower and plan accordingly because there will be many points where you are behind cattle, horse and carts, tractors and cyclists.

The Causeway Coastal Route
If you are planning to head north during your trip when you rent a campervan in Ireland, one route you should consider taking is the Causeway Coastal Route. This route starts in Belfast City and finishes in Derry. It follows the dramatic and beautiful coast of Northern Ireland through the nine stunning Glens of Antrim to reach the legendary Giant’s Causeway. Completing this route takes around 3 to 5 days, covering 185km properly. You can stop off at spots like Murlough Bay, the Torr Head Scenic Rout, and many beaches along the way to the Causeway.

Traffic Rules in Ireland

Traffic rules with a motorhome
  • You always drive on the left-hand side of the road in Ireland

  • Give way to vehicles from the right and turn left on entering a roundabout

  • Speed limits are measured in kilometres/hour, not miles an hour

  • Unless otherwise stated, the speed limit is 50km/hr when driving in built-up areas, 80km/hr on local and regional roads, 100km/hr on all national highways and 120km/hr driving on motorways. You should always look for signs indicating the speed because you could be fined 80 euros on the spot and given three penalty points on your licence.

  • The traffic light sequence is slightly different in Ireland compared to other European countries. Red means stop, and immediately after the red light is Green, which means go. However, the Amber light comes on before the red to warn drivers to stop unless they can safely do so.

Places of interest and excursions in Ireland

Glendalough Valley, County Wicklow
One great place to visit for a unique experience when you book a motorhome for hire in Ireland is Glendalough Valley in County Wicklow. The park is located in Wicklow Mountains National Park, which features glacial lakes that can be strolled around and a 6th-century monastic settlement that can be explored. The visitor centre is excellent, and guided tours are available if you want to learn more as you explore.

The Ring of Kerry, County Kerry
If you are in County Kerry or at any point during your trip when you hire a campervan in Ireland, you should go to The Ring of Kerry. You can take a horse and cart tour or explore the National Park and Lakes of Killarney independently. Skellig Michael is popular with Star Wars fans. In Episodes VII and VIII, it was used as the location of Luke Skywalker’s Sanctuary on the distant planet of Ahch-To.

Giant’s Causeway, Antrim
It is a dramatic natural beauty site with around 40,000 basalt columns that all interlock. Many are hexagonal. It is a place of myth and legend and the filming location for films like Hellboy II and Your Highness, as well as the television series Game of Thrones. UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland national nature reserve.
