Couple Cottage, Vienna, written on 5 months ago

Very good experience. Somewhat uncomfortable with two small children (3 years + baby). We recommend the top camper. As for pick up and drop off, at least at the Vienna location, there is no criteria based on stipulated times. It is on a first-come, first-served basis and whoever gets up first when the guy walks past. We had an hour at 14h to pick up the camper, we left at 16h. We had previously passed by at 11h in the morning to try our luck and pick it up earlier, but they told us not to. Even so, they offered us the possibility of leaving all our luggage in an unguarded corner to make time until that time. Nothing is explained, everything is set up so that you can do it yourself and let them know if you have any doubts. When we booked, they made us pay around €40 and a bit to be able to arrange the return after 11am (at 3pm). I left the venue at almost 6pm in the afternoon.

Essential pointers for your trip to Vienna

April to May and September to October are the best times to hire a campervan in Vienna. The temperatures are mild and warm enough to enjoy al fresco living and sightseeing. There are also fewer tourists than in June, July, and August. If you're a culture vulture, then motorhome rental in Vienna from September to November could be good, as there are plenty of festive and Christmas markets on.

  • Danube Delights
    Danube Delights

Vienna is located in the east of Austria on the banks of the mighty Danube River. A focal point in the city, the river flows into the Danube Valley countryside, offering spectacular scenery and a rich patchwork of hills, forests, and mountains. It is perfect for campervan touring and ideal for outdoor enthusiasts or those who just want to enjoy the views.

  • Driving in Vienna
    Driving in Vienna

Like most historic European cities, Vienna was never designed for modern vehicles, particularly large ones. Fortunately, the city has an excellent public transport system including trams, buses and a metro. If you're not used to driving in a city with trams – the rules and regulations on trams are not the same as for cars and motor vehicles - then you may find it easier to avoid doing this.

  • Culture and History
    Culture and History

Vienna is a cultural hub in Europe and has been a historic centre of power for the last thousand years, first during the medieval period and then later with the Habsburg dynasty. This rich heritage is evident in the absolute wealth of galleries, museums, and theatres. The magnificent architecture, historic buildings and landmarks are complemented by a café culture, making sightseeing a real pleasure.

The Wachau Valley
Around 80 kilometres from Vienna is the beautiful Wachau Valley, an area famed for its spectacular scenery and rich history and culture. The valley lies between the towns of Melk and Krems, and the best access is the A22 motorway to Stockerau, followed by the interchange to S5 until you reach the Krems exit. Known as the Romantic Road of Austria, the route follows the Danube past historic monasteries and castles through vineyard-clad hills. Melk is famous for its Abbey, one of the finest Baroque churches in Europe.

Vienna to Salzburg
The drive from Vienna to Salzburg is 312 kilometres and takes just under four hours on the A1 Autobahn. However, you can develop this trip into a three-day scenic tour and take the E59 from Vienna to Hallstatt with stops at Lichtenstein, Melk and Steyr. Hallstatt is a picturesque village in the Austrian Alps with stunning views. It's then just 77 kilometres to Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and a city packed with history and culture.

Sites of interest and excursions in Vienna

Seegrotte Hinterbrühl
Seegrotte Hinterbrühl is a former gypsum mine and now Europe's largest underground lake. Located in Lower Austria, just 15 kilometres south of Vienna, the lake was accidentally created when the mine flooded after an explosion in 1912. Part of the mine was used in the film The Three Musketeers, and it has a fascinating history throughout the Second World War. Visitors can take a boat trip on the lake.

Vienna Woods
Within easy reach of the city and just half an hour's drive, the Wienerwald is a 28-mile section of forested hills with spectacular walks. Hike up to the Jubiläumswarte lookout tower for sweeping views of the city below. There are designated walking trails through the forest, which vary in length and difficulty.

Bratislava, Slovakia
Just an hour from Vienna is the capital of Slovakia, which has an authentic blend of architectural styles and a magnificent Renaissance castle. Bratislava and Vienna are two of the most closely located European capital cities. Add in a visit to Devin Castle, one of Slovakia's oldest castles and of significant archaeological importance.

FAQs for Campervan hire in Vienna
  • Tolls are compulsory on all autobahn freeways, federal highways and expressways in Austria. All these roads are cashless, so you'll need a pre-paid toll sticker called a vignette when you rent a motorhome in Vienna if your rental vehicle doesn't come with one.

  • Wild camping in Austria is illegal, with penalties of up to €500 or sometimes higher if you wild camp in a national park or nature reserve. Lighting a campfire is also unlawful.

  • From 1 November to 15 April, it is mandatory in Austria to have winter tyres on a campervan or motorhome. These tyres should have a minimum depth of 4mm. Holidaymakers should also be aware that they must carry a warning triangle, safety vest and first aid kit in their vehicle; this is a year-round requirement and something to check on your campervan in Vienna. If you are driving and wearing glasses, you must also carry a spare set.
