Helpful tips for your trip to Switzerland
The best time to book a campervan in Switzerland is late spring, early summer, or early autumn to get the best balance of fewer crowds and pleasant weather.
- Skiing holidays
Although Christmas and New Year are the most popular times to visit Switzerland for a skiing holiday to enjoy a cheaper experience with fewer crowds and better snow, aim for some time between January and March.
- Hiking
Are you looking to hike in Switzerland? The best time to go is during summer, between late June and early September when the weather is pleasant.
- Animal spotting
You can see wildlife at any time in Switzerland, but for the clearest views of some of the amazing wild animals that call the country home, like foxes, hedgehogs, mountain hares, snow voles, bearded vultures, golden eagles, marmots, ibex, ptarmigan, and chamois, you should aim to go during the dryer months from May to September.
Best campervan driving routes around Switzerland
An enjoyable way to spend time when you book a motorhome for hire in Switzerland is to take advantage of the many exciting driving routes around the country that offer some of the most spellbinding views of its famous natural landscapes.
Furka Pass, Obergoms to Andermatt
One of the most exciting driving routes in Europe is one you should consider when you hire a campervan in Switzerland. The Furka Pass is 35 km of exhilarating snaking, steep driving through the Alps. The highest point is 2,429 metres high and offers stunning views over the plateau and the impressive Rhone Glacier. In Goldfinger, the 1964 James Bond Movie 007 drove along the Furka Pass in one of the most memorable scenes. The route will leave you feeling a little 007.
Southern Switzerland Peaks – Lugano to Zermatt
If you want to drink in the country's best views of mountain scenery, you should head southwards and follow a route that encompasses the Gothard and Furka passes from Lugano to Zermatt. 264 km, you start the route in Lugano, which borders Italy, before heading to Locarno and entering the Alps at Airolo. Make sure you allow enough time to enjoy driving through Gotthard Pass and stop in Andermatt for some high-elevation and rewarding hikes. Then it’s onto Furka Pass, with its many bends and twists before reaching Bettmeralp.
Julier Pass, Chur to St Moritz
Stretching for around 157km, Julier Pass is a uniquely beautiful route from Chur to St Moritz, taking you from the Alps to the Engadine Valley. Despite the sublime scenery on display along this route, it is less popular than other roads but has been practical since the times of the Roman Empire. In fact, as you drive along, you can see the ruins of a Roman temple along the way.
Traffic rules in Switzerland
You drive on the right-hand side in Switzerland and overtake on the left-hand side.
Unless there are other signs or indications, vehicles approaching from the right have the right of way at intersections.
Swiss speed limits are 50km/h in built-up areas, 80 to 100km/h (depending on local signage) in non-built-up regions, and 120km/h on motorways.
