  When you rent a motorhome in Pisa, driving in the centre can be challenging like many historic cities not built for modern vehicles. The centre of Pisa is closed to cars and is a Zona Traffico Limitato (ZTL), a status enforced by cameras that use automatic number plate recognition to fine unauthorised drivers.

  Beside the Sea

  The city sits on the alluvial plain of the Arno River, about 10 kilometres from the Ligurian Sea. Some lovely beaches are within easy reach of the city, perfect for when you rent a campervan in Pisa, including Marina di Vecchiano, part of the Migliarino—San Rossore—Massaciuccoli Nature Park. This beach offers sand dunes, pinewoods and crystal clear water and is an excellent base for your motorhome and just a short hop back into Pisa.

  Pisa is a compact city, so it is possible to see a good amount of the city's history and heritage in a relatively short time. The Leaning Tower is iconic and open to visitors, although numbers are limited. Visitors can also walk the medieval city walls built between 1154 and the end of the 13th century.

Pisa to Genoa
Hug the coastline and take a beautiful journey from Pisa to Genoa, 165 kilometres and just over two hours drive. The SS-1 autostrada is busy, and the way to get the best sea views is to turn off into one of the numerous attractive towns en route, including Monterosso al Mare, Viareggio, Rapallo, Porto Venere, and Santa Margherita. 

Pisa to Florence
Florence is Tuscany's Renaissance capital and an easy drive when you hire a campervan in Pisa. It takes just over an hour and a half on the A11/E76, at a distance of 112 kilometres. Florence has a remarkable cathedral and numerous museums and galleries, including the Uffizi Gallery, which contains works by Botticelli.  

Pisa to Bologna
From Florence, you can head to Bologna, or if you're driving directly from Pisa, you can bypass Florence and take the SS64 at Pistoia. It's a similar distance as going via Florence, 177 kilometres, and takes around two and a half hours. Unsurprisingly, Bologna has a rich culinary history with a huge variety of bistros, cafes, and street food, plus pasta-making classes for the dedicated chef.

Sites of interests and excursions outside of Pisa

Lucca
Lucca is a city on the Serchio River and an excellent base for exploring the Apuan Alps and the coastline at Versilia. An Olive and Wine Trail runs through the Lucca hills from Lucca to Montecarlo and Versilia, a journey of stunning scenery and incredible local tastes.

Chianti
The Chianti region is one of the most beautiful parts of Tuscany, a series of hills linking Florence and Siena. Experience traditional Tuscan food and wine, breathtaking scenery, and plenty of opportunities to hike and bike. It's the perfect place to head to when you pick up your motorhome for hire in Pisa.

Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre, or the Five Towns, is a must-see Tuscan destination. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore are a line of ancient fishing ports clinging to the cliff faces overlooking the sea. They all have picturesque harbours and charming houses, and each village has its character and unique features.
