With 4 adults it was very tight both beds and dining table The camper still had some faults but all went well We will not rent a motorhome again, we were disappointed

There were several minor flaws and at pick-up we would have liked more explanation on how everything works and not a quick rush. They assumed we already knew it a bit so we later bumped into many things that were not explained.

Travelled across Canada for 4 weeks with an almost new motorhome. Pick-up and drop-off went very smoothly, partly due to the all-risk insurance. Sleeping in the bed above the cabin was fine. Climbing into it is doable, but requires practice. It's not really a camper for 4 people.

Vehicle was 8 years old and in poor condition. Had to have tyres checked in Calgary and Cruise America replaced all the rear tyres there ! One rear tyre was already flat (no tread). One of the tyres was from 2012 ! Unacceptable to drive with this... (feedback Cruise America Calgary... ) but according to Cruise America Vancouver, the tyres were fine (even after seeing photos with the condition... ungraspable). Joke cost me 1.5 days. By the way, the head of Cruise America Vancouver claimed that tyres from 2012 were fine... and that the info on tyres was the tyre size: she had no idea what she was talking about. Pictures and documentation all available. Incidentally pointed this out to them at check-in, but was told (tyres are OK sir...). By the way, exhaust was also partly broken off and when going uphill the exhaust fumes entered the cabin ! This too was not understood (we now understood why the rear bedroom wall had been repaired: probably rather fire/scorch holes). The service and professionalism in Calgary was top !!! In Vancouver, a bunch of amateurs. Had to wait extra long for our campervan in Vancouver because campervan was not ready, was somewhere in the back and the person in charge of bringing the vehicle to the front was not available (the other person had just had an eye operation they said, and was not allowed to drive). During check in back in Vancouver, without having seen the vehicle !!! , to recover certain damage from us (window, side): luckily we had taken photos on departure (and when we showed that, the complaint was immediately withdrawn: a nice attempt to make us pay extra fees!!! This was just some feedback... camper was also not clean: when clearing out camper, we found clothes (in cupboards, under sofa/table), chargers and packets of chewing gum from previous users. Shower heads were missing and, after we reported it, they fixed them... some feedback. I have often rented motorhomes, this was the worst experience ever, by far ! They gave 200$ compensation, I just accepted as we are going ahead with the holiday. All photos and documentation available if you want to see and use it. Your service as Camperdays was excellent by the way.

The process was very good. So was the return. It is incomprehensible to me why the motorhome did not have winter tyres on it when it was rented out so late. In addition, you couldn't read anything in the operating instructions about frost-protected or NOT frost-protected water or waste water tanks. I didn't know whether the car had a winter pack. I was lucky.

Vehicle was handed over in an obviously carelessly cleaned and maintained condition (cutlery and table surface greasy, cockpit surfaces dusty). The seal of the waste water hose was missing, so that dirty water gushed out of the connection during dumping (1st workshop start-up with diversions necessary). Furthermore, the bracket of the hose was already broken when the vehicle was taken over, so that it was resting on the road (2nd workshop start with diversions necessary).

The motorhome was OK but it was a bit old and had some things that didn't fit well.

Condition of the vehicle was top, cleanliness was top, price-performance ratio average, especially the extra package "cookware-linen-free kilometres clearly too expensive. Pick-up and return process could be improved, staff very unfriendly.

Saver 4 (MH-C, MH-B or MH-A), Vancouver, written on 6 months ago

We used the Saver4 deal as it represented the best value for money, and because it offered the three RVs were thought were best suited to our needs. We received the middle option (MH-B) which offered more than enough space for the two of us. The over cab bed space wasn’t used and there were draws and cupboards everywhere for stuff. RV layout was excellent. Bed was comfy. The CanaDream instructions + documentation gave us everything we needed.

Canadreams is not the cheapest provider, but absolutely recommendable! Motorhomes in top condition, perfect service with no waiting times at pick-up and drop-off, very friendly staff. We will definitely be booking with Canadreams again on another trip to Canada.

Everything went well, especially the good organisational communication with Camper Days in advance. However, we were surprised that we were not allowed to use the awning. This was not mentioned anywhere beforehand. We felt this was a considerable loss of comfort!

Enjoyed the rv. We’re travelling with two and gladly would also CanaDream again next time but for a smaller vehicle. Shower and toilet worked well, big fridge and stove, enough storage space.. Received a vehicle with a leaking tap, spent a day in Victoria to get it fixed (which was dealt with very well), mold inside the cabinet showed it had been there for a while. Other than that, bed sleeps very well, powerful engine in the vehicle. CanaDream company very well in Vancouver pick up array. Camper days wasn’t very helpful on the phone. Also beware you are not allowed to use the awnings

Despite the low season, we received the full service from Fraserway. Only the water system was out of order due to frost. We were able to use the toilet with a canister and antifreeze, which was known beforehand.

We were very happy with Fraser way and the Ford E350 Camper C-Medium. There were only two of us, but the vehicle has plenty of space for probably up to five or six people. The vehicle is comparatively luxuriously equipped with thermostat and heating!

With an automatic gearbox, diesel would be a great fuel instead of petrol. That way the engine wouldn't always roar so much

The service at Fraserway is outstanding and we would always choose Fraserway over their competitors in the future. The staff are friendly, the service and vehicles are great. The shuttle service should also be praised. Colle 5 stars!

Fraserway was better than previous rentals with Cruise America, Cruise Canada, El Monte and some other providers. Especially the prior contact (live chat), the scheduling of the shuttle to the rental station, the waiting time for the camper on site and the equipment/condition of the camper etc.

Most topics went fine. I only have to remark one thing. If you choose the optional insurance (Ergo) from Camperdays and not the origin from the rental company you have to cover 8.500 CAN Dollars with creditcard and most times you do not have these. Then you have to pay twice times. Be careful.

Top tips for your Campervan trip to Victoria

The most important thing to know is that there are no bridges over to Vancouver. This means you must carefully plan your ferry crossings if heading off the island. They run very regularly but can get booked up, especially for larger vehicles. If you are after a campervan for hire in Vancouver, the best time to visit is in the summer, as the weather is at its best. Spring is also lovely, with fewer crowds.

  • Driving
    Driving

Think less stress, and more scenery. The city is small, with some narrow roads, but the ones on the outskirts are bigger and have some campervan-specific parking. Overnight parking is prohibited on the streets, so plan your campsites accordingly.

  • Family Friendly-Activities
    Family Friendly-Activities

Beacon Hill Park & Petting Zoo is ideal, just a few minutes outside the centre. Theres also a playground where kids can burn off energy. Bug Zoo and Miniature World are two other quirky attractions. Bug Zoo is small, but kids can hold giant stick insects, and the miniature world has over 85 miniature displays.

  • The Outdoors
    The Outdoors

16km outside Victoria is Goldstream Park, which has its own campsite in the middle of 600-year-old trees and a hidden waterfall in the forest. Beach hopping along the west coast is also popular, with French Beach Provincial Park being a popular choice.

Best Campervan routes from Victoria

Pacific Marine Circle Route
This is a popular route with those that hire a campervan in Victoria because it's always nice to end up where you start. It's a 280km route that goes through towns, the coast, forests, and some culture. We recommend doing it over a few days, stopping at Port Renfrew, a small town known for its big waves. Take a slight detour to see Big Lonely Doug, one of Canada's largest Douglas Fir trees. This loop has it all and is one not to be missed.

Victoria to Port Hardy
This one-way 500km route takes you into the world's northern tip of Vancouver Island. You can drive in 6-7 hours, but that's no fun; you want to stop as often as possible. Some key places to stop are Rathtrevor Beach and the Campbell River area. Take a detour to Elk Falls Provincial Park, where you can walk over a suspension bridge and check out a waterfall. Telegraph Cover is also good for whale watching and has some lovely history if you are into that sort of thing.

Victoria to Ucluelet
This is another classic route for those who pick up their motorhome rental in Victoria. It heads towards the Pacific Rim National Park on the island's west coast. It's a nice drive with some great places to stop along the way.  Stop at Nanaimo and try a Nanaimo bar (a Canadian snack). Then it's a winding drive to Tofino where you will drive through some mountain passes. Take your time, enjoy the views and stop for plenty of photos. This route allows you to take Victoria's city life to what feels like another world.

Sites of interest and excursions in Victoria

Malahat SkyWak & Spectacular Views
Just 28km from Victoria is an attraction not to be missed. Open air, accessible for all and offering adventure, has become a favourite for Victoria's visitors. Theres plenty of parking for campervans at the skywalk. As you get to the top, you get views of the forest, the mountains, and the sea. You can even step onto the adventure net if you are feeling brave enough, where you can look straight down.

Fort Rodd Hill
Fort Rodd Hill feels like you have stepped back in time. It's a 19th-century coastal artillery base that was once a naval base. Now, you can wander through old barracks and underground tunnels, which kids will love. Within the same area is Fisgard Lighthouse (the oldest in Canada), which is a great place to get a picture for Instagram. It's a leisurely day's outing that's only 20 minutes from the centre and makes a great first stop on your campervan trip. For those who choose motorhome for hire in Victoria, you should definitely stop here.

The Butchart Gardens
Butchart Gardens used to be a limestone quarry that has become one of the world's best botanical gardens. It's over 55 acres in size, and it's like walking through something out of a fairy tale with different themed gardens, all of which change with the seasons. You could easily spend half a day here, and it's a great place to stop in your campervan. Even if you are not into gardens, you will love it.

FAQs for Campervan hire in Victoria
  • There are bears, cougars and wolves. The good news is that you won't likely encounter any of these during your trip as they have other interests in mind. Just don't leave food outside your van.

  • It's something to think about and budget for, but the chances are you will pick up your van on the island and won’t want to leave (as it is that good).
