We were already there at 12 noon for the pick-up. The pick-up time was 3 pm. Ok, our mistake to be there so early. But they didn't even manage to get the camper ready by 3pm. At 3.30 pm! The time had finally come. We were always put off because it was peak season. Yes, it was, but we also pay the prices for it. At the very least, it would have been more than reasonable for the vehicle to be ready by 3 pm at the latest. Lots of broken things in the camper such as the table couldn't be fixed, not enough oil, no keys included with the bike racks, toilet door broken. Front windscreen not cleaned when handed over. On handover we were informed that something had broken off the table. But simply told us to keep the broken part we found. Nothing repaired. We had to go back the next day because of the bike rack and the oil and we were made to look stupid. The oil was not topped up. And when we checked with the engine cold, there was almost no oil left. I wrote an email to Camper Day and they said I would have to see if they would reimburse me if we topped up the oil ourselves. That's why we didn't top up the oil, I'm not going to pay for things I can't help. The return went well.

We rented a camper for the first time and were pleasantly surprised by the super friendly service, help and co. Our trip went pretty smoothly and even with small defects that we only discovered in the course of the rental, there was a friendly thank you for the message at the end.

Top tips for your trip to Malmö

The best times to hire a campervan in Malmö are spring, summer, and early autumn (May to September). The days are long, and the weather is hot (but not too hot). Winter can be even more beautiful, but it's challenging to drive in the snow, but it's up to you.

Malmö is a compact city to explore, but you might stay in the city before or after your trip and then head out to the surrounding areas.

  • Driving
    Driving

The roads are well maintained, signage is clear, and traffic outside the main cities is usually pretty good. Even during the winter, the roads are cleared of snow and maintained, but all rental campervans will have winter tyres fitted for the months they legally need them.

  • The outdoors
    The outdoors

Most people come to Sweden for the outdoors. Skanör-Falsterbo is a peninsula just 30km outside of Malmö. It has white sandy beaches and is a bird watchers' paradise. If hiking and cycling are more your thing, Söderåsen National Park could be a good choice.

  • Family friendly activities

Hiring a campervan in Malmö means you can bring the kids along. There are plenty of family-friendly activities to do in the area. The Technology and Maritime Museum in Malmö is a popular choice. Kids can explore submarine exhibits, try flight simulators and participate in hands-on experiments.

Once you are in Lapland, you can see the Northern Lights, visit an ice hotel, or go snowmobiling.
