Our top tips for renting a campervan in Italy and touring Sardinia
Go on a Sardinia road trip and explore everything the island has to offer. The busiest period for renting a campervan is from May until September so booking in advance is highly recommended.
At CamperDays we offer flexible bookings, which means if your travel plans change, we immediately contact the rental company and take care of the rebooking free of charge. Many of our partners are accommodating and do not charge any rebooking fees. In case you have any questions before or after booking, you can contact our friendly customer service team by telephone.
Some of Sardinia’s best attractions
Sardinia is known for its fantastic coastline and ancient history. Below we have put together some of the best sights to visit
Capo Testa
In Northern Sardinia, between the Costa Smeralda and the Maddalena Islands, Capo Testa has crystal-clear turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. These beaches are the island's most picturesque beaches.
These beaches are free in comparison to those on the Costa Smeralda and you don't need to take a boat to get to them. It is recommended to go to Santa Reparata for windsurfing and snorkeling.
Castelsardo
An old and busy little fishing harbor town, which is full of pastel-colored buildings. By going up the hill you will be able to visit a 12th-century castle with a museum that explores the local specialty of basket making.
Amazing views of the coastline can be seen at the top. The Duomo, in the little plaza below, has one of Sardinia's finest altarpieces, which dates back to the 15th century.
Tour Nuraghe Su Nuraxi
This ancient village is the nearest one to Cagliari, which even offers 30-minute tours and English-speaking guides. The outer walls were built in the 11th or 12th century BC. You can go inside the tower and climb to the top for a close-up view of the stacked dome.
Make sure to visit the Casa Zapata Museum after exploring the towers. Here you can find fascinating exhibits and another nuraghe.
Santa Cristina Nuraghe and the Holy Well
This is one of Sardinia's most diverse archaeological attractions, where you can visit a well-preserved "holy well". There is also a well temple dating back to 1100 BC and a nuraghe tower where you can climb to its open wildflower-strewn roof for views of the prehistoric stone village.
Make sure to stop between the well and the nuraghe to see the group of tiny stone pilgrim lodgings, which were former monks' cells surrounding a 12th-century church.

To drive an RV in Italy you will need to have an international driving permit plus your US driver’s license. You will also need to be aged 21 or over. Some rental companies may require further documentation so always check with the provider before booking. In addition, make sure to check for local speed limits and road regulations before renting an RV in Italy as speed limits and road regulations differ to those in the USA. You can stay in Italy for up to 90 days without needing to apply for a visa.
Camping in Sardinia around tourist hotspots can be expensive. Sosta camper or Aree di sosta camper are cheaper alternatives to camping grounds in tourist hotspots. The average cost is between $5 - $15 a night depending on the location, but they do not all have on-site facilities so checking on Google maps before planning and booking is recommended.
Most major airports in Italy offer direct flights to one of the three airports on the island. The best way would be to fly from the US to one of the major airports in Italy and get a connecting flight to one of the airports in Sardinia. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from mainland Italy to one of the ports in Sardinia.
We would recommend staying in Sardinia for a week. This will give you enough time to visit the main sights and the island’s capital Cagliari, but you will also still have enough time to relax at the beach.
The best time to visit Sardinia is from April – June when the weather is warm to explore the island and to go for a swim in the crystal-clear sea.
