Christchurch to Queenstown
When you are short on time and want to try and experience as much of the impressive South Island as possible, take a short route from Christchurch to Queenstown. Start the route in Greymouth, a little seaside town, then travel southwards along NZ’s rugged coastline, stopping at the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, marvelling at their majesty before travelling down through the mountains towards Queenstown. This entire part of the South Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so every bend, corner, turn, ascent and descent will allow you to be in awe of nature.

Christchurch South Loop
If you have more time to explore the South Island thoroughly, take the Christchurch South Loop. Enjoy the rich variety in the passing land, from rugged coast to windy, pristine beaches and then glaciers and mountains. Look out for Lake Tekapo and the Southern Alps as key parts of this journey.

Christchurch North Loop

Banks Peninsula, Christchurch
This beach has been there for over 6 million years, when two volcanoes violently erupted, and the resulting craters became the harbours of Akaroa and Lyttelton. The entire part of the coast covers around 1,150 square kilometres. There are several bays across Banks Peninsula where you can stop to worship the sun, catch a tan, or participate in various water-based activities.
