Madrid is one of the best cities to visit, not just in Europe but worldwide. It makes the perfect starting place for a Spanish campervan adventure. When you hire a campervan in Madrid, you can get outside and explore the surrounding areas close to mountain ranges, such as the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Mediterranean, as well as towns such as Castile-La Mancha. You can explore all this at your own pace, staying longer in areas you enjoy or just calling at some places as you pass by. With a campervan, you can explore at your own pace.
Planning your trip couldn’t be easier. We have a price comparison tool with some filters that make it easy to find the perfect campervan in Madrid for you. If there are only two of you, then a smaller campervan might be the best option, but a larger motorhome with extra beds could be the best choice if there are only two of you.

Valuable tips for your trip to Madrid
Motorhome rental in Madrid is best in the summer when the weather is best for enjoying the outdoors with a campervan. However, it can be almost too hot at times, reaching close to 40 degrees Celsius, so if you can’t stand the heat, the peak summer might not be the best time for you. September to November might be a good time; it will still be warm but more comfortable for you to enjoy being outside.
- Festivals
San Isidro, in May, is one of the most popular. It honours the city's patron Saint with concerts, parades, and traditional events. If you visit earlier in the year, they have the Madrid Carnival, which hosts street parties and music throughout the city.
- Outdoor activities
Being outdoors and hiring a campervan go hand in hand. The Sierra de Guadarrama National Park is a great place to visit. There are plenty of hiking trails, and it's a great place to spend the day. If you prefer cycling, Madrid Río Park, which runs along the river, is one of the best city bike rides you could wish for.
- Sightseeing
Like any capital city, Madrid has many things to see. As your time might be limited, we recommend you visit the Royal Palace, one of Europe's largest. The Almudena Cathedral is also grand; from its top, you can enjoy great city views.
Campervan offers for couples in Madrid
For a romantic trip for two exploring Madrid and other cities nearby, a smaller motorhome is just right. Discover our selection of vehicles for two people and explore together.
Campervan offers for families in Madrid
If you want to go on a family camping holiday in Madrid, we recommend a large motorhome. Alcove models are very popular with families with children, as the motorhomes are spacious and have several sleeping and seating areas.

Best campervan routes around Madrid
Madrid to Toledo
Madrid To Toledo is an excellent short 70km drive that takes you through Castile-La Mancha, known for its fantastic countryside. It's only a short drive and should take just over an hour, which is a perfect place if you only have a campervan hire in Madrid for a short time. You take the A-42 motorway out of the city, and the route is direct. Take a slight detour and call in at the town of Illescas, which is about halfway to Toledo. Once you arrive in Toledeo, we recommend parking on the city's outskirts, as it's an old town with tiny narrow streets that were not made for big campervans. Check out the cathedral and the El Greco Museum.
Madrid - La Mancha - Granada - Malaga
People need to remember just how big Spain is when they rent a campervan in Madrid. This is a mammoth 540km that takes you from Madrid to the Costa del Sol, straight through Andalusia. It starts on the A-4 motorway, with the first stop in the La Mancha region; we recommend the down of Conseuegra, where you can check out the windmills. Then, onto Granada, which is full of history, including Alhambra, an old fortress. After Granada, get on the A-92 motorway towards Malaga, which takes you through the fantastic Andaulisan countryside full of fishing villages and olive trees.
Madrid to the Sierra de Gredos
If you love the outdoors, then a 160-km drive to Sierra de Gredos could be the one for you. This drive starts on the A-5 motorway and takes you through valleys and picturesque villages such as Navaluenga and El Tiemblo, which are worth visiting before you arrive at the amazing mountain range of Sierra de Gredos. It's a place full of wildlife, where you can see the Spanish Ibex and take some amazing pictures.
Best excursions and sites of interest around Madrid
Aranjuez
Aranjuez is a short 50km drive just south of Madrid, with a lavish royal palace and fantastic gardens. It's the former residence of the Spanish monarchy and a great example of Baroque architecture. You could spend a whole day here just exploring all the rooms inside. The gardens are equally impressive, with the Prince’s Garden and the Island Garden being the best. The town of Aranjuez is also worth walking around, there is a lot of history and it's not as busy as the Madrid city centre.
Alcalá de Henares
Alcalá de Henares is the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. It's a great town to explore, and its city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Alcalá Cathedral and the beautiful Plaza de Cervantes are must-visit places.
Las Rozas Village
If you want to shop when you rent a motorhome in Madrid, Las Rozas Village is the palace for you. This high-end shopping boutique has over 100 designer brands and sometimes offers up to over 60% of the RRP. It’s open seven days a week and has plenty of parking. It makes a great end to a campervan trip as it's a good chance to spend any money you have left over and treat yourself.

We don’t recommend driving around the city centre that much with your camper van for hire in Madrid. Get your campervan and head out of the city. The traffic is terrible, and there are low-emission zones that you might be unable to drive in if you visit the centre, park on the outskirts, and get the bus in.
No, if you are thinking about motorhome for hire in Madrid, then you must know that wild camping is not allowed. You must stay in designated campsites.
