Why is it worth booking a campervan in Houston early?

When you pick up an RV rental in Houston for a road trip vacation, you have total freedom to explore Texas and beyond. Head down to the Mexican border, or cruise along on excellent roads to visit the cities of Memphis and New Orleans. Along the way, you can stop whenever anything catches your eye. Enjoying a vacation in a camper rental from Houston is very popular, especially in the months of April and August. If you're planning on taking your vacation during these months or, indeed, at any time during the summer, we recommend booking your camper in Houston several months in advance. This way you can be sure of getting the best price deals as well as the vehicle and dates of your choice. Among the benefits you'll enjoy with your early bird booking are a transparent cancellation policy and reservation changes at no additional cost. Perfect, if you have to alter your vacation dates. You also get access to the friendly and knowledgeable CamperDays customer service team. A team member is always on hand to answer any questions and offer useful advice on campervan living and planning your route. While the cost of a camper rented in Houston may seem expensive initially when you compare it to the cost of hotel accommodation, car rental, and restaurant meals it begins to seem very competitive.

Top tips for your Campervan trip to Houston

Texas is massive, but Houston is centrally located, which makes it perfect. However, it can get very hot during the summer, so pick up plenty of water for your trip. Plan your trip, as areas might be further away than you think.

  • Driving
    Driving

Most of the roads connecting well-known places are wide open roads with incredible scenery that are well maintained. Avoid driving in the main centre of Houston if you can, as traffic can be bad, especially during rush hour. Always remember to fill up on fuel, as petrol stations might be challenging to find in some remote areas.

  • Family Friendly-Activities
    Family Friendly-Activities

The Space Centre is the most well-known (adults will love it just as much). If you want a chilled day out, Hermann Park is a good option before you head out on your adventure. It's right in the middle of the city and is home to the Houston Zoo, which has over 6,000 animals.

  • The Outdoors
    The Outdoors

TGalveston Island State Park is just an hour away with sandy beaches, kayaking and birdwatching areas. Sam Houston National Forest is also recommended, as it has plenty of hiking trails and fishing opportunities. Brazos Bend State Park is unique as you might be able to see alligators in their natural habitat.

Best Campervan routes from Houston

Houston to Palo Duro Canyon State Park
As Texas is big, we wanted to include a big road trip. This 900km drive is perfect if you plan to hire a campervan in Houston, taking you through the heart of rural Texas towards Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Make a stop at Waco, where you can see the remains of ancient mammoths at the Waco Mammoth National Monument. Once at the Palo Duro Canyon, the landscape changes into something that resembles the Grand Canyon. Hike the Lighthouse trail, a 10km hike to the park's most iconic rock formation.

Houston to South Padre Island
The Journey from Houston to South Padre Island is a 600km drive south, and its ideal for anyone considering campervan hire in Houston, allowing you to explore the Texas Gulf State at your own pace. As soon as you leave Houston, the busy streets are replaced with long stretches of highway and a glimpse of the coast. A good place to stop is Corpus Christi (roughly halfway), where you could visit the USS Lexington or the Texas State Aquarium. After that, there are some other small towns, but once you arrive at South Padre Island, you relax. There are beachfront campsites that let you park right next to the water.

Houston to Caddo Lake
As you drive along quiet roads made for a campervan adventure, the scene will change into open farmland and quiet towns. Stop at Nacogdoches (the oldest town in Texas), with its red brick streets and antique shops. Once you arrive at Caddo Lake, the landscape will transform into something magical, like a hidden world waiting to be discovered. For campervan travellers, Caddo Lake State Park is the ideal base. The park features campervan-friendly campsites with hookups, picnic areas, and easy access to the lake’s natural beauty. Spend your evenings relaxing by a campfire, listening to the sounds of the forest, and enjoying Caddo Lake's slower pace.

Sites of interest and excursions in Houston

Armand Bayou Nature Center
Covering over 2,500 acres, this preserve is one of America's largest urban wilderness areas and a great destination if you rent a motorhome in Houston. It is a chance to explore wetlands, woodland and coastal prairie. The area is best known for its bird watching, but you can also take part in guided canoe tours offering a different perspective.

Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center
Sheldon Lake Park is 30 minutes outside Houston, making it an ideal first stop when picking up your campervan. The John Jacob Observation Tower gives you great views over the city and is the perfect place to get a picture for Instagram. The park also has hands-on exhibits where you can learn all about conservation and wildlife. It's a nice quick stop for anyone passing by in a campervan.

Battleship Texas
Just 40km outside of Houston in La Porte is the Battleship Texas. If you are into history, this is a must-visit, as it is now a floating museum. Children will love it as well. You can explore the decks, engine room and living quarters and experience what it was like for sailors who lived onboard during the wartime.
